API 5L Line Pipe: PSL1 vs PSL2 Explained

API 5L pipe comes in two product specification levels. PSL2 adds toughness testing, tighter chemistry and more control, and many projects require it by default.

Key takeaways

  • API 5L (also ISO 3183) is the main line pipe standard for oil and gas pipelines and much plant piping.
  • PSL2 adds mandatory Charpy impact testing, maximum limits on yield and tensile strength, carbon equivalent limits and full traceability.
  • Grade names give the minimum yield strength: X52 means 52 ksi, which is about 360 MPa (L360 in metric).

Two levels, one standard

API Specification 5L covers seamless and welded steel line pipe. It defines two product specification levels: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL1 is the basic quality level. PSL2 adds requirements that matter for toughness, weldability and consistency.

What PSL2 adds

  • Charpy V-notch impact testing is mandatory, so the pipe has known fracture toughness.
  • Maximum yield and tensile strength limits, plus a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio. This matters for pipelines designed with strain-based methods and for field bending.
  • Carbon equivalent limits, which improve weldability in the field.
  • Tighter chemistry with lower sulfur and phosphorus.
  • Traceability of every pipe back to its heat.
  • Weld seam NDT requirements are more extensive.

Grades

Grades are named by specified minimum yield strength (SMYS). Grade B is about 245 MPa. The X grades give SMYS in thousands of psi: X42, X52, X60, X65, X70 and X80. The metric name is the SMYS in MPa, so X65 is also L450.

GradeSMYS (approx.)Typical use
B (L245)245 MPaPlant piping, low-pressure lines
X52 (L360)360 MPaFlowlines, gathering lines
X65 (L450)450 MPaExport pipelines, offshore
X70 (L485)485 MPaLong-distance high-pressure lines

Annexes you will see on datasheets

API 5L has annexes for special service. Annex H covers PSL2 pipe for sour service, with extra tests for hydrogen-induced cracking. Annex J covers PSL2 pipe for offshore service, with tighter dimensional tolerances and testing. A purchase order for a sour offshore line may call for both.

Onshore

Onshore plant piping often uses API 5L Gr. B PSL2 or dual-certified pipe (API 5L Gr. B / ASTM A106 Gr. B / A53 Gr. B) for flexibility in procurement.

Offshore

Offshore pipelines and risers commonly use PSL2 with Annex J, and Annex H as well when the fluid is sour.

What to take back to your desk

If a datasheet just says “API 5L X52”, ask which PSL and which annexes. Without them, two suppliers can quote very different products at the same price.
